BHS Student Selected for PMEA Region 1 Chorus Festival
On January 25-27, Alexa Vecere, Brandon Havranek-Thellman, Matt Young and Max Levine participated in the PMEA District 5 Chorus Festival.  While there, they auditioned for the PMEA Region 1 Chorus Festival.  Max Levine was selected to the Chorus based on his audition scores.  The Region Chorus Festival will be held March 7-9 at Mercer HS, and students will audition for All-State Choir while there.  For more information, please email Mrs. Maura Underwood at underwoodm@bsd.k12.pa.us. 2012 Coaches Vs. Cancer Fundraising Campaign
The 2012 Coaches Vs. Cancer basket raffle is underway! Tickets are being sold at all home sporting events.  The baskets are displayed at these events and can also be seen in the attached flyer by clicking on the link below.  You can also purchase tickets by contacting Mrs. Sally Diehl in the Blackhawk Athletic Office at (724) 846-6600 ext. 212.  The winning basket raffle tickets will be drawn at half time of the Girls' Varsity Basketball Game on February 13.

Blackhawk FFA Wins First Place
Congratulations to the Blackhawk FFA Team for winning first place in the Agriculture Education Demonstration Contest at the PA Farm Show in Harrisburg! Their demonstration "Get Cookin" described the construction and use of an outdoor oven that can be used for grilling, griddling, smoking, and baking.  The Blackhawk team members were Megan Powers, Kristen Cook, Rachael Milnes, Selina Bonomo, and Jessica Cook.  This is the third year in a row that Blackhawk has captured first place.  Way to go!
Stringsfest 2012
On Monday January 16th the 6th annual Stringsfest 2012 was once again a success this year with over forty 4th-7th grade Blackhawk String Orchestra students enjoying  a day full of performances, instruction and fun!  Thanks to a grant provided by the Blackhawk Foundation Blackhawk School District Orchestra Director Nate Goodrich was able to bring in electric instrument expert and violinist Steven Vance as well as Berklee College of Music graduate and bassist Jeremy McDonald to instruct the students for a full day of string playing.
PMEA Region 1 Band
On January 12-14, four members of the Blackhawk Band participated in the PMEA District 5 Band Festival.  While there, they auditioned for the PMEA Region 1 Band Festival.  Gennifer Dusold-flute was selected to the band based on her audition scores.  Two other Blackhawk Students, Kaylyn Kiser-clarinet, and Jake GIbson-baritone saxophone, were selected as first alternates based on their audition scores.  The festival will be held February 22-24 at Norwin HS.  Congratulations to Gennifer, Kaylyn, and Jake!
BSD Winter Swim Programs
Are you looking for something fun to do during the cold winter months?  At Blackhawk, it's always warm in the swimming pool!  There are a variety of winter aquatic programs available to Blackhawk community members.  On Mondays-Thursdays that the school is open, you can participate in open family swim, Adult Learn to Swim classes, or Master's swimming classes.  There will also be an American Red Cross Lifeguarding class offered in May 2012.  Please click on the link below to view a full schedule as well as pricing for the winter aquatic programs.

Facebook Parent Seminar
Parents of students in grades K-12 are invited to attend an informational meeting about the legal implications Facebook and other forms of social media.  Richard Shaheen, from the State Attorney General's Office, will present to parents of Blackhawk students on Thursday February 2 at 6:30 PM in the High School auditorium.  He will also meet with Blackhawk High School students on February 1 and 2 during the school day.

4th Annual Classical Showcase
The Blackhawk Music Department is sponsoring the 4th  Annual All-District Classical Music Showcase on Tuesday, February 7, 2012.   The Classical Showcase is a recital program open to students in grades K-12 attending Blackhawk School District. 

Interested singers and instrumentalists must currently be studying privately with a studio teacher in order to perform a solo/duet. Instrumentalists include those who study piano, a stringed instrument or band instrument.

Substitute Nurses
Blackhawk School District is in need of nurses who are willing to substitute for our school nurses throughout the school year.  Any individual who has an LPN or an RN license and is willing to sub in one of our buildings should complete the application by clicking on the link below.  They should also submit a current resume, and any clearances that they currently have (Act 34, Act 151, FBI Fingerprint).  Substitute nurses will be paid $75 per day.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten, a guide for parents of 3 and 4 year olds, was distributed through the area preschools. If you are a parent with a child who will be entering kindergaren in the Blackhawk School District and you did not receive one of these books, you can contact the District Office at 724-846-6600, ext. 240 and one will be mailed to you.
